Should You Buy Oriental Rugs Online? Yes!

If you are in the market for a beautiful rug you may be inclined to head to your local carpet shop or a store that specializes in Oriental rugs.  Did you know that you have other options?  You can buy Oriental rugs online.  In fact, the Internet may be the best place to buy your rug, if you know what to look for.

Educate Yourself

No matter where you end up purchasing your rug you want to educate yourself about Oriental carpets.  Unlike the mass produced rugs you find in most carpet or department stores, real Oriental rugs are works of art.  The truly remarkable ones can take years to make, and frankly, the price reflects the work involved.

Real Oriental rugs are available in three basic categories; new, semi-antique and antique.  To some degree, the older the rug is, the more you will pay for it, assuming the quality is similar.  Older rugs should be in good shape and any repairs should blend in seamlessly in order to retain their value.

Many of the newer rugs are made in India and China.  These rugs are often machine made, dyed with chemical based dyes and are more designed for show than quality.  There is nothing wrong with them, but they aren’t authentic.  If you are getting a rug for the purpose of decorating, not investment, these are fine and will cost a lot less.

Knot count, origin, pattern and the way the rug is made will affect the cost and quality.  Not all Oriental rugs have pile, some are flat woven, for example, Kilim rugs.  Make use of the Internet to figure out what style of rug you want.

Target Your Search

Once you have some idea of what you want out of your Oriental rug, measure the area you want covered.  To show off your new acquisition to the best advantage you need a border around it.  Getting a piece of fabric and laying it down to estimate the right size is a good idea.

Next, evaluate the colors that will go best in your room.  Some carpets are bright and richly hued, others are almost pastel in color.  Do you want pile or a flat rug.  A flat rug may look best on wall to wall carpeting while a pile rug looks wonderful when placed on hardwood floors.

Find Your Seller

Online, you will find many  websites selling Oriental rugs. Do your homework.  You can safely ignore any website that doesn’t provide lots of pictures of any rug they are selling.  Good vendors understand that since you are not able to touch and actually see the rug, you will want plenty of other evidence of the quality of the item involved.  Next, check for reviews.

Any reliable online seller will have positive reviews that are written by customers.  When you buy Oriental rugs online you need to know that you are dealing with an honest and reliable company. Customer reviews help you to avoid getting cheated.  With your new education, a targeted search and good reviews you are ready to make your purchase.

  1. Nice post! When purchasing oriental rugs, new owners should choose a reputable dealer who can also provide care and maintenance services for the rug. And very importantly, keeping the rug out of the sunlight will make sure the rug lasts as long as possible. Thanks for sharing!
